Here at Jurnfern Art our mission is to highlight and celebrate Black beauty and talent in the fashion industry. As part of our fashion week coverage this season, we put together a list of three amazingly talented Black fashion designers who put on noteworthy presentations of their Spring 2022 collections at Paris Fashion Week last month. Check them out below!
Wales Bonner
The Wales Bonner Spring 2022 collection was designed with a slow and steady transition to life outside of quarantine in mind. Thus many of the pieces are meant to flow easily from the home to the office. Pieces were created to look 'lived-in' and evoke a sense of 'escapism' and the feelings of being on holiday. You can definitely feel this laid-back vacation energy from the soft earthy color palette and light breezy fabrics. The textiles were also an area of focus, as designer Grace Wales Bonner wants to promote a 'cultural luxury' with pieces made from locally produced fabrics by artisans in West Africa. Though this was technically a men's collection, there were a few dresses in the mix, like the crochet slip pictured above, and the suit silhouettes look as though they would work just as well on a woman's body.

Balmain
This season, creative director Olivier Rousteing was celebrating 10 years at the helm of Balmain. This collection was very personal to Rousteing. In fact, bandage dresses in the beginning of the show were a direct reference to an accident Rousteing had been in, in which he suffered burns and had to wear similar bandages during his recovery. These pieces, though they represented pain, also represented the 'power of healing.' At the end of the show, several archive pieces from Rousteing's past collections for Balmain came down the runway (this was definitely our favorite part!). The juxtaposition of the past and present collections really showed how far Rousteing has come, and what direction he is heading next.

Thebe Magugu
The looks from the Thebe Magugu Spring 2022 collection were inspired by the designer's old family photos of his grandmother and aunt. The reference photo for each ensemble hung behind their respective looks. There was a contrast amongst the collection between more conservative, and more alternative punk aesthetics, reflecting the differing personalities of Magugu's aunt and grandmother. Magugu even incorporated the tradition of wax print, but personalized it with portraits of his family in place of the usual African iconography. The collection was full of pieces that were bold, yet very wearable. And, the color palette offered a little something for everybody, from bright pinks and greens, to contrasting red and black, to soft lavenders. This collection can take you through a casual day, a Sunday lunch with the girls, and a formal night out - all with the added charm of Magugu's personal design touches.
